Our Approach
What does it mean to be a “fear free vet tech”?
It’s not just having a strong foundation in the animal wellness field. It is seeing the toughest moments for your pet, and also the best ones…and being patient, observant, and overwhelmingly compassionate enough to help them through both.
Fear Free certification is an additional level of knowledge that both enhances the quality of pet care, and reduces anxiety triggers that can cause a fearful experience for your pet. Examples of this practice may include offering enticing food distractions while completing a procedure, providing extra time for the pet to adjust to a new environment, removal of stimuli such as noise or presence of additional animals and people, or modifying handling techniques to make the pet more comfortable.
What can I expect during a visit from The Hometown Vet Tech?
Our mission is to provide vet tech services, such as sanitary shaving, ear flushing, and nail trims, through gentle, medically informed one to one care. Pets who are senior, fearful/anxious/stressed, or mobility-challenged are those that benefit most, but all pets are welcome.
The first visit is considered a consult, which will take place in the home of the pet. It entails a meet and greet, plus one service offered to your pet. This first visit may include up to one hour of face-to-face time, where we discuss getting to know you, your pet(s), and their needs. The idea is to form a unique plan for your pet. You can expect to talk about previous history, behavioral and medical concerns, allergies, and other specifics that will build toward a successful visit with minimal stress and maximum comfort. We will also ask about your veterinarian and will be glad to connect with them as needed if deemed appropriate, such as if your pet requires prescription medication for services, specific wound care, or other medical plan provided by your licensed veterinarian.
From the first visit on, we can establish our best approach going forward, frequency for services, and of course, every effort will be made to cement a positive relationship with the pet. Many families prefer visits on a regular basis, such as every four to eight weeks if your needs are consistent, such as for senior care or nail trims. Others prefer consults, (whether in-person or by-phone), on an as-needed basis, such as during post-operative care or end of life care.
